Michael created this medical history animation in After Effects to show that complicated, even dark, medical subjects can be approached by using simple graphics, and a dash of humour. This light-hearted approach can be applied to many other science and medical animations as well.

EDINBURGH: A BODY SNATCHER’s TALE

A 19th century animation designed for the 21st century

In the early nineteenth century, private schools of anatomy flourished in Scotland, particularly Edinburgh. Medical students flocked to these schools in great numbers to learn modern surgical techniques from some of the worlds greatest anatomists.  Unfortunately, there were not enough human corpses to supply this demand for knowledge and the learned professors had to depend on groups of people with questionable backgrounds who trafficked in dead human flesh. The era of the body snatcher was a dark period in medical  history where medical ethics, religious burial practices and socioeconomic realities clashed with a spectacular and gruesome effect.
